Best Homemade Deck Cleaner: What Works and What Doesn't
Homeowners frequently ask about homemade deck cleaning solutions. The answer depends heavily on the deck material. What works on pressure-treated pine can damage Ipe. What is safe for composite can be too harsh for hardwood. This guide covers the most common homemade deck cleaner options and how they apply to different materials.
Oxygen Bleach (Sodium Percarbonate)
Oxygen bleach — sold under brand names like OxiClean — is one of the safest and most effective homemade deck cleaning options. Mixed with water, it removes mildew, algae, and surface grime without the harshness of chlorine bleach. It is safe for most wood species and does not strip the natural colour from hardwoods the way chlorine bleach can. For a homemade solution, mix approximately 1 cup of oxygen bleach powder per gallon of warm water.
Dish Soap and Water
For light cleaning and routine maintenance, a mild dish soap mixed with water is effective on most deck surfaces. Apply with a soft-bristle brush, scrub with the grain, and rinse thoroughly. This is suitable for composite and PVC decking, and for light surface cleaning on hardwoods. It will not remove deep mildew or oxidation.
White Vinegar
Diluted white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) can help with mildew and algae on some surfaces. However, vinegar is acidic and should be used cautiously on Ipe and other dense hardwoods — repeated use can affect the wood's surface. It is more appropriate for composite and PVC decking.
What to Avoid on Ipe and Hardwoods
Chlorine bleach is the most common mistake homeowners make when cleaning Ipe and other hardwood decks. Chlorine bleach can strip the natural colour from the wood, raise the grain, and accelerate weathering. Power washing at high pressure can also damage hardwood grain. For Ipe, use oxygen bleach or a dedicated hardwood deck cleaner, and use a low-pressure rinse.
Composite Decking
Most composite and PVC decking manufacturers recommend mild soap and water for routine cleaning. Check your product's warranty documentation before using any cleaning product — some chemicals can void the warranty. Oxygen bleach is generally safe for composite, but always test in an inconspicuous area first.
