Ipe hardwood is extraordinarily durable — naturally resistant to moisture, insects, and UV radiation. Left untreated, Ipe weathers to a silver-gray patina that many owners find attractive and that requires no maintenance. But for those who prefer to maintain the rich, warm tones of fresh Ipe, periodic refinishing is the answer — and it works, provided the wood is in reasonable structural condition.

The Refinishing Process
Assessment
We inspect the deck for structural issues, loose fasteners, damaged boards, and the condition of any existing finish. Structural repairs are addressed before refinishing begins. We will tell you what the refinishing process can and cannot achieve for your specific deck.
Cleaning
The deck is cleaned with a professional-grade Ipe cleaner to remove dirt, mildew, tannin stains, and any remaining old finish. Pressure washing is used carefully to avoid raising the grain.
Brightening
An Ipe brightener is applied to restore the wood's natural pH and open the grain for oil absorption. This step is critical for achieving even penetration of the finish oil.
Sanding
Where the wood surface has weathered significantly, sanding removes the gray oxidized layer and reveals fresh wood beneath. This step is labor-intensive but produces the most dramatic restoration results.
Oil Application
A penetrating hardwood oil is applied in multiple coats, allowing full absorption between applications. The oil nourishes the wood and provides UV protection. Multiple coats are required for full penetration.
Maintenance Schedule
In Florida's climate, Ipe decks typically benefit from refinishing every one to two years to maintain their color. The frequency depends on sun exposure, proximity to salt water, and the owner's aesthetic preference. Decks in full sun on the ocean will weather faster than shaded inland installations.
