Composite Decking in Florida's Climate
Composite decking is a broad category covering wood-plastic composite (WPC) and capped composite products from manufacturers including Trex, TimberTech, and others. The common thread is reduced maintenance compared to natural wood — no staining, sealing, or painting required. But not all composite products perform equally in Florida's climate. Capped composite — with a protective polymer shell on all four sides — resists moisture, staining, and fading significantly better than uncapped products. For pool decks and coastal applications, capped PVC (no wood fiber at all) is the appropriate specification.

Capped Composite
A wood fiber core with a protective polymer cap on all four sides. The cap resists staining, fading, and moisture absorption. TimberTech's capped composite lines are an example. Appropriate for most residential and commercial applications in South Florida.
Capped PVC
100% PVC with no wood fiber — the appropriate specification for pool decks and coastal applications where moisture performance is the primary requirement. TimberTech AZEK and similar products fall into this category.
Uncapped Composite
Earlier-generation composite products without a protective cap. Lower cost but more susceptible to staining and moisture absorption over time. Not recommended for Florida's climate — particularly for pool decks or coastal properties.
Composite vs. Hardwood in South Florida
The choice between composite and hardwood is not simply a cost question — it is a performance and maintenance question. Ipe and tropical hardwoods offer a natural appearance and proven durability in Florida's coastal environment, but they require periodic maintenance: cleaning, sanding, and oil application to maintain appearance and prevent checking. Composite and PVC decking require no periodic finishing — cleaning with soap and water is typically sufficient.
For pool decks and high-traffic commercial applications, composite and PVC are often the appropriate specification. For luxury residential estates where the natural wood appearance is a design priority, Ipe or hardwood may be the better choice. Deckmasters installs both and will recommend the appropriate material based on the specific project.
Framing & Substructure
Composite and PVC decking requires a properly designed substructure. Joist spacing, blocking, and ventilation requirements vary by manufacturer and product line — and are specified in the manufacturer's installation guidelines. Deckmasters follows manufacturer specifications for all composite installations.
For coastal and pool applications, aluminum framing is the appropriate substructure specification — it offers exceptional corrosion resistance in coastal environments and does not require the same maintenance as pressure-treated lumber. For inland residential applications, pressure-treated lumber framing is standard. The framing material choice affects the long-term performance of the deck as much as the decking material itself.
Hidden Fasteners & Hardware
Most composite and PVC decking systems are designed for hidden fastener installation — clips that attach to the board edges rather than face screws through the surface. Hidden fasteners produce a cleaner appearance and eliminate the surface penetrations that can allow moisture ingress. Stainless steel or manufacturer-specified hardware is required for all coastal applications. Deckmasters uses FastenMaster and manufacturer-specified fastening systems — Deckmasters is a FastenMaster Specialist of the Year award recipient.
Maintenance & Lifespan
Composite and PVC decking requires significantly less maintenance than natural wood. Periodic cleaning with soap and water removes dirt, pollen, and organic material. Capped composite and PVC products resist staining from food, beverages, and pool chemicals — though prompt cleaning is still recommended.
Manufacturer warranties for capped composite and PVC products typically cover fading, staining, and structural integrity for 25–30 years, depending on the product line. Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and product — Deckmasters can provide specific warranty information for the products we install. Warranty coverage applies to the decking material itself; the substructure is not covered by the decking manufacturer's warranty.
