Why Use Ipe Oil on Ipe Decks and Other Hardwood Projects
Ipe oil is a penetrating hardwood finish specifically formulated for dense tropical hardwoods like Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa. Unlike film-forming finishes that sit on the surface, Ipe oil penetrates the wood fibres and protects from within. In South Florida's climate, it is the most appropriate finish for maintaining the appearance and longevity of a hardwood deck.
What Ipe Oil Does
Ipe oil replenishes the natural oils in the wood that are depleted by UV exposure, heat, and weathering. It slows the greying process, maintains the wood's rich colour, and provides a degree of water repellency. It does not form a surface film, which means it does not peel, crack, or trap moisture the way surface coatings can.
Why Film-Forming Finishes Don't Work on Ipe
Ipe is so dense and oil-rich that film-forming finishes — paints, varnishes, and many sealers — cannot penetrate the surface adequately. They sit on top of the wood and eventually peel, particularly in South Florida's heat and UV exposure. Peeling finish on an Ipe deck is both unsightly and difficult to remove. Penetrating oils avoid this problem entirely.
Application Frequency
In South Florida's climate, Ipe decks in direct sun typically need re-oiling every 12–18 months. Covered or shaded decks may go 2 years between applications. The deck should be cleaned and, if necessary, lightly sanded before re-oiling to ensure good penetration. Applying oil to a dirty or oxidised surface produces poor results.
Other Hardwoods
Ipe oil is appropriate for other dense tropical hardwoods including Cumaru, Garapa, and Massaranduba. It is not formulated for softwoods like cedar or pine, which require different products. For composite and PVC decking, no oil or finish is needed or appropriate.
Professional vs. DIY Application
Applying Ipe oil is a manageable DIY task on a clean, well-prepared surface. The key is surface preparation — the oil can only penetrate as well as the surface allows. For decks that have not been maintained for several years, professional cleaning and sanding before oiling produces significantly better results than oiling over an oxidised surface.
