Ipe Installation Requires Experience
The same density that makes Ipe last for decades makes it demanding to install correctly. Pre-drilling, acclimation, fastener selection, and gap spacing are not optional steps.
How Deckmasters Installs Ipe
Ipe's density — 3,680 lbf Janka — is what makes it durable. It is also what makes it unforgiving to install. Every fastener requires a pre-drilled pilot hole. The wood must acclimate to the site environment before installation begins. Board spacing must account for the wood's minimal but real movement across seasons. Hidden fastener systems require precise spacing and consistent board thickness. Skipping any of these steps produces a deck that looks wrong from day one or fails structurally over time.

The Installation Process
Site Assessment and Design
We assess the site, review structural requirements, and confirm the deck design — including board orientation, fastener system, edge details, and any stair or railing integration.
Material Acclimation
Ipe is delivered and allowed to acclimate to the site environment before installation begins. This step is critical for dimensional stability and consistent gap spacing.
Substructure
The substructure — joists, beams, and posts — is installed or verified to be structurally sound. Ipe's weight requires a properly engineered substructure. In coastal and waterfront applications, marine-grade framing and hardware are specified throughout.
Board Installation
Each board is pre-drilled and fastened with stainless steel hardware or hidden fasteners. Spacing is set for drainage and movement. Stainless steel is the only appropriate fastener specification in Florida's coastal environment — galvanized hardware is not suitable for Ipe's tannin content.
Finishing and Detail
Ends are trimmed, edges are detailed, and the surface is cleaned. Borders, picture frames, and transitions are cut and fitted. An initial oil application is recommended to protect the wood during the first season.
Fastener Systems
Ipe can be installed with face-screwed stainless steel fasteners or hidden fastener systems. Hidden fasteners produce a cleaner surface with no visible hardware — the preferred approach for luxury residential and hospitality projects. Both approaches are appropriate depending on the design and budget. All Deckmasters Ipe installations use stainless steel hardware throughout — 316 marine-grade in coastal and waterfront applications. Galvanized fasteners are not appropriate for Ipe's tannin content or Florida's salt-air environment.
