Waterfront Construction Built for the Exposure
Coastal boardwalks and waterfront docks face conditions that standard deck construction is not designed for — tidal exposure, salt air, storm surge, and continuous UV. The framing, hardware, and material specification have to be right from the start.
Marine-Grade Construction, Not Deck Construction
A boardwalk or dock in Florida's coastal zone is not a wide deck. The substructure must be engineered for the specific site — pile depth, joist sizing, and hardware specification all depend on tidal exposure, load requirements, and the distance from saltwater. Marine-grade pressure-treated framing, stainless steel fasteners, and composite or Ipe decking surfaces are the appropriate specification. Galvanised hardware corrodes in South Florida's salt-air environment and is not appropriate for waterfront applications.

Every waterfront installation Deckmasters builds specifies marine-grade pressure-treated framing and 316 stainless steel fasteners throughout. In tidal and salt-air environments, the fastener and hardware specification is as important as the decking surface — a structurally sound boardwalk with the wrong hardware will fail at the connections long before the boards show wear. We do not substitute galvanised hardware on waterfront work.
Permitting and Coastal Compliance
Boardwalk construction in Florida's coastal zone requires coordination with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), local building departments, and in some cases the Army Corps of Engineers. Deckmasters manages the permitting process from initial survey through final inspection — including CCCL applications, environmental reviews, and structural engineering coordination. As a licensed contractor, we are the contractor of record on all permitted work.
