What Is Deck Cladding?
Deck cladding is the material applied to the visible structural elements of a deck that are not the walking surface itself. The fascia board covers the rim joist at the deck's perimeter. Stair risers cover the vertical face of each stair step. Skirting panels close the gap between the deck frame and the ground. On elevated decks, cladding can also cover the posts, beams, and the underside of the deck frame.
Deck cladding serves two purposes: it protects the structural framing from direct weather exposure, and it provides a finished appearance to the parts of the deck that are most visible from ground level. A deck with unclad pressure-treated framing looks unfinished. A deck with Ipe or composite cladding matched to the decking surface reads as a complete architectural element.
Ipe Hardwood
The premium choice for deck cladding in Florida's coastal environment. Naturally resistant to moisture, insects, and UV. Ipe cladding matched to an Ipe deck surface creates a seamless, high-end appearance. Develops a silver patina naturally or can be maintained with oil.
Composite & PVC
Composite and PVC cladding systems — typically from the same manufacturer as the decking — provide a colour-matched, low-maintenance alternative to wood cladding. Appropriate for composite deck installations where material continuity is a priority.
Other Tropical Hardwoods
Cumaru, Garapa, and other tropical hardwoods offer similar durability to Ipe at different price points. Appropriate for cladding applications where the premium Ipe specification is not required.
Deck Cladding Applications
Fascia Boards
The fascia board covers the rim joist at the deck's perimeter — the most visible structural element from ground level. Fascia is typically the same material as the decking surface, or a complementary material. Ipe fascia on an Ipe deck creates a seamless appearance. Composite fascia on a composite deck matches the manufacturer's colour system.
Stair Risers
Stair risers cover the vertical face of each stair step. Open risers — no cladding — are common on residential decks but create a less finished appearance. Closed risers in Ipe or composite match the stair tread material and complete the stair assembly.
Deck Skirting
Skirting panels close the gap between the deck frame and the ground on elevated decks. Skirting can be solid, louvered, or slatted — depending on the ventilation requirements and the design intent. Ipe slatted skirting is a common specification on luxury residential decks.
Post & Beam Wraps
Structural posts and beams can be wrapped in Ipe or hardwood cladding — concealing the pressure-treated or engineered lumber framing beneath a premium wood surface. Common on pergolas, covered outdoor rooms, and elevated deck structures.
Soffit & Ceiling Cladding
